E. Salustiano - Aphorismi Confessariorum - 1610

Aphorisms of Confessors collected from the opinions of Doctors Author: Emanuele Sa’ Lusitano, Doctor of Theology of the Society of Jesus. Recently carefully expurgated by the Reverend P. M. Sacri Palatii Apost. Indicated by Doctors in the places and expanded with annotations by Andrea Victorello Bass. Theol. illustrated & augmented. Naples, at Lucretium Nuccium, 1610. Imprinted at the expense of Lazaro Scorigij. In-16° (mm 105 × 75 in the binding). Pages (30), 904. Contemporary limp parchment binding, with manuscript title on the spine ("Aphorismi Confess."). Worming (worm tracks) spread throughout the work, as visible from the photographs; leaves with normal signs of age (stains, yellowing, small marginal losses), but the text generally legible and complete. A work of practical moral theology intended for confessors, organized alphabetically by lemmas (from “Abbas” to “Xenodochium”). It gathers and synthesizes the sententiae of the principal doctors and theologians (Thomas Aquinas, Scotus, Navarro, Azor, Sánchez, etc.) on questions of conscience, sins, sacraments, censures, donations, legacies, sacred orders, excommunication, and other casuistical cases. It is one of the most important and widespread seventeenth-century manuals of casuistry, conceived as a practical tool for rapid consultation. The Neapolitan edition of 1610 is one of the early expurgated versions after the placing on the Index (circa 1603) of some propositions deemed too permissive; it presents the corrections of the Master of the Sacred Palace and the annotations of Andrea Vittorelli. Manuel de Sá (Emanuele Sa Lusitano, c. 1530–1596), Portuguese Jesuit, renowned theologian and biblical scholar, was the author of works of wide European diffusion. The Aphorisms Confessoriarum (first edition Venice 1595) constitute his most important and controversial work: after being placed on the Index, they were continually reprinted throughout Europe in corrected editions until well into the middle of the seventeenth century. A edition of great rarity: the Neapolitan printing by Lucrezio Nucci (at the expense of Lazzaro Scoriggio) is extremely scarce; Italian libraries know of only a single copy. A small-format exemplar, typical of the “pocket” editions intended for the daily use of the clergy. An interesting testimony of post-Tridentine Jesuit casuistry and of the history of ecclesiastical censorship.
