The Alchemist in His Studio with Assistant and Memento Mori (Vanitas) We present a fascinating and richly painted oil scene that captures the complex atmosphere of an alchemist's study. The central panel depicts a mature alchemist, dressed in a fur-lined mantle and a headdress, lifting and carefully studying a glass retort against the light. His expression is focused and analytical. He sits beside a draped table set over a sumptuous Oriental rug with geometric and vegetal motifs. At his side, in a deeper shadow, a young assistant with a dark cap watches him, adding a narrative element of learning or collaboration. The composition is imbued with the powerful symbolism of Vanitas. Beside the assistant, on the table, a human skull rests on a parchment sheet with handwritten text, reminding us of the transience of earthly life and material results relative to the eternity of the spirit. The surrounding environment is a rich workshop of instruments: ceramic vessels adorned with reliefs (one decorated with a putto/winged figure in relief and Baroque motifs in gold and blue), ancient books open, compasses and other alchemical apparatus scattered in the foreground, on the wooden floor, and against the dark background. The masterful use of chiaroscuro concentrates attention on the alchemist's face, on the bottle, and on the skull, creating a dramatic atmospheric effect typical of Northern European Baroque painting. The painting is executed in oil, a technique that allows rich color and visible subtlety of tone. However, the support is particularly interesting: the use of copper as a painting ground was a Flemish/Dutch specialty, especially valued between the 16th and 17th centuries for its smooth surface, which allowed meticulous detail and a luminous rendering of colors. The copper contributes to tonal density and color retention. The painting is in the style of the 17th-century Flemish or Dutch “Little Masters” (Northern or Southern Netherlands School). The rendering of fabrics (the rug, the fur), the dramatic light, and the still-life precision of the alchemical instruments recall the tradition of artists such as David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade, or followers of Gerrit Dou. The detail of the Oriental rug is particularly well executed. The painting appears in good antique condition, considering its age. The copper plate shows slight, natural oxidation at the edges, typical and authentic for this support. There are small abrasions and scratches. Fast and trackable shipping
