DUTCH SCHOOL OF THE 19TH CENTURY, ACCORDING TO FRANS VAN MIERIS THE

DUTCH SCHOOL OF THE 19TH CENTURY, ACCORDING TO FRANS VAN MIERIS THE

Descriptio Oil on two oak panels, unstrung. Dimensions: 50 x 38 cm. Dimensions with frame: 67 x 63.5 cm. This work is a 19th-century interpretation of a composition by Frans van Mieris the Elder, one of the most refined representatives of the Leiden School during the Dutch Golden Age. The painting reproduces a model known as The Painter’s Studio, based on a now-lost work by the Dutch master that was formerly held in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. As in many of Van Mieris’s compositions, the scene unfolds in a meticulously rendered interior, where the artist pays particular attention to the details of objects, textures, and lighting effects—elements that made his work famous and were widely admired and copied in subsequent centuries. Frans van Mieris was renowned for the extraordinary delicacy of his brushwork and the meticulous detail with which he depicted genre scenes set in elegant domestic interiors. His works enjoyed great prestige among European collectors, especially for the quality of their execution and their ability to combine naturalism, technical virtuosity, and narrative refinement. During the 19th century, coinciding with the renewed interest in the 17th-century Dutch masters, numerous compositions by Van Mieris were copied and reinterpreted by artists and collectors drawn to the elegance and technical perfection of his models. This painting retains the intimate and sophisticated character typical of the Leiden tradition, distinguished by the careful execution of details and its fidelity to the spirit of the original composition. Painted on a two-panel oak panel and preserved without mounting, it constitutes an interesting testament to the reception and dissemination of Dutch Golden Age painting during the 19th century, as well as to the continued prestige enjoyed by Frans van Mieris’s works among European art lovers and collectors. Batch in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permit from the country of origin may be required.
