Duck decoy - Antique c

Beautiful and highly decorative antique European hunting decoy depicting a male Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos), dating approximately from the 1930s–1940s. Entirely hand-carved from wood and hand-painted, this charming decoy has survived with a wonderful authentic patina that gives it the unmistakable character of an object originally created for practical use rather than purely for decoration. The Mallard is immediately recognizable by its deep green head, warm brown breast and particularly attractive blue wing speculum. The plumage has been interpreted in a wonderfully expressive folk-art manner, using bold areas of blue, cream, brown, black and ochre. The individually painted feather details give the bird a remarkably graphic and decorative appearance. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the relatively simple carved form and the elaborate painted wings. The surface retains extensive age-related wear, revealing the wood beneath in several areas and creating a beautiful natural patina that could only develop through decades of handling and use. The underside shows pronounced and convincing wear, consistent with the object's utilitarian origins as a hunting decoy. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces of age form an essential part of its history and authenticity. Before the widespread introduction of mass-produced plastic decoys, wooden birds such as this were traditionally placed on or near the water to attract wild ducks. Many were individually made by local craftsmen or hunters, which explains the great variety in carving styles and painted decoration found among surviving European examples. Today these original working decoys are increasingly appreciated not only as hunting collectibles, but also as examples of European folk art and vernacular sculpture. Period: circa 1930–1940 Origin: Europe – exact country/workshop unknown Material: Wood Technique: Hand-carved and hand-painted Subject: Male Mallard / Wild Duck Dimensions: approx. 30 × 14 × 10 cm Condition: Authentic vintage condition with extensive age- and use-related wear, losses and fading to the original painted surface. No attempt has been made to disguise its patina. Please carefully examine the photographs, which form an integral part of the description. A characterful and increasingly difficult-to-find original hunting decoy, distinguished by its strong silhouette, beautiful green head and exceptionally decorative blue-wing detailing. A fascinating survivor from European hunting culture of the first half of the 20th century and an excellent piece of authentic folk art.
