Doulton and Rix Marqueterie 5-Tube Stoneware Vase

This Doulton and Rix Marqueterie footed vase is a stoneware vessel produced by the Doulton Lambeth factory. The form is a multi-lobed tulip style featuring three main vessel compartments arranged around a central core. The piece is surmounted by a bifurcated handle with a scrolled top. The base is adorned with three applied, winged griffin figures positioned between the lobes. The entire form features undulating, scalloped rims at the top and foot. The exterior surfaces are decorated with a marbled or agate glaze effect, showing swirls of blue, gray, and terracotta tones. A band of geometric checkerboard patterns in light and dark gray sits just below the upper rim. The item is heavily accented with gilding on the scalloped rims, the central handle, and the three applied griffin figures. Fine beaded gilt bands serve as borders between the marbled and patterned areas. The base bears several marks, including the impressed circular Doulton Lambeth mark and a date mark for 1882. Additional impressed marks include X18 and F. One lobe bears hand-painted characters in black: MW over a symbol resembling a simplified anchor or P with two dots, alongside the number 1554.
