DIPTYCH ICON Black ink, highlights in white with traces of blue and red pigments, on wood covered with bleached linen, with an antique patina and signs of age and veneration. Ethiopia Circa 1850 48 x 61 cm Provenance: - Formerly in a private collection, Switzerland - Formerly Sam Fogg, London Exhibition: - Sam Fogg, Ethiopian Art exhibition, 2005, London. A rare diptych icon consisting of two separate panels covered with bleached linen and painted in black ink with touches of blue and red pigments. The right panel depicts the Virgin and Child, in the style of Santa Maria Maggiore, against a fabric background supported by two angels; below, the prostrate donor couple—the man on the left holding a rosary and the woman on the right. An inscription reads: “How Gäbrä-Amlak Goshu, together with his wife Wäyzäro Wälättä Sellasé, made supplications” / or “sought protection.” The upper part of the left panel shows Saint George on horseback, slaying the dragon, with Birutawit hidden in a tree above. It features a long inscription: “How Saint Mar Giyorgis, the blessed and chaste king, venerated and most exalted, brilliant and radiant, courageous and powerful, martyr, wonderful and victorious, eminent in battle, the sun of Lydda, star of Persia, martyr of Our Lord Jesus Christ, leader of the 7,999,999 martyrs, slew the dragon.” What stands out about this diptych, aside from its near-monochrome color scheme, is the exceptional refinement of the drawing, with its remarkable realism and abundance of decorative flourishes. It reveals the work of a highly gifted artist, with few equals in the Ethiopian artistic repertoire.”
