His work was mainly inspired by the human figure and a combination of naturalism and expressionism. From the 1960s, Mytaras shifted toward naturalism, while from 1975 the expressionist approach became increasingly pronounced in his production. Biografia Dimitris Mytaras was born in 1934 in Chalkis. From 1953 to 1957, Mytaras studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Yiannis Moralis and Spyros Papaloukas. [2] Leaving Greece in 1961, he studied scenography at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris with Labicse and Jean-Louis Barrault thanks to a three-year scholarship. [3] [4] Subsequently, in 1966, he returned to Athens, where in the five years from 1961 to 1966 he participated in the São Paulo Art Biennial and the Alexandria Biennial. Upon his return to Athens he held the retrospective “Studio on a Mirror” at the Merlin Gallery, at a time when he was strongly influenced by abstraction, and he stated that “Ultimately, my deepest concern is the idea of changing form” (referring to his show). [3] From 1964 to 1972, he directed the Interior Decoration Laboratory of the Athens Technical Institute. From 1975, he taught at the Painting Laboratory of the School of Fine Arts of Athens. Mytaras participated in more than 30 international group exhibitions, including the 1972 Venice Biennale. [5] He was also a renowned scenographer and worked for major Greek theatres, including the National Theatre of Greece and the National Theatre of Northern Greece. Mytaras died on 16 February 2017 in Athens.
