DENMARK. Silver Restrike Alchemy Medal, 1692. Copenhagen. Christian

DENMARK. Silver Restrike Alchemy Medal, 1692. Copenhagen. Christian V. NGC MS-66. Galster-245; JS-403; Bruun-15385; Weight: 39 gms. Diameter: 42 mm. Engraver: Unsigned. A Premium Gem Mint State medal with razor sharp details, a lovely toning and a blazing luster surrounding the lightly mat devices. Very rare with no contemporary survivors in silver. On February 10, 1692, an adept staged a silver transmutation before King Christian V and Queen Charlotte Amalie. Captivated, the King celebrated this "triumph" by striking this commemorative medal, featuring the royal C5/A monogram and a reverse depicting God's hand blessing a crucible with the inscription: "What was volatile has been made stable by art." The illusion - likely executed via a pre-prepared crucible - was swiftly debunked. The King famously amended his diary with the dry postscript: "N. B. dog Bedrageri" (N.B. Deception nonetheless), leaving the medal as a lasting monument to Baroque credulity. Estimate: €1,800 - €2,200. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection.
