DENMARK. Penny, (1018-35). Lund Mint. Cnut (Knud den Store). NGC AU

Excessively Rare Early Agnus Dei Type DENMARK. Penny, (1018-35). Lund Mint. Cnut (Knud den Store). NGC AU Details--Planchet Flaw. Hauberg-6; Hauberg Collection-40; Malmer-551.1651; Bruun-1316 (illustrated Plate 3); Weight: 1.14 gms. Moneyer: Biorn. While all other Scandinavian Agnus Dei dies have blundered legends, this excessively rare type has fully intelligible legends on both side: ANGNVS DEI ANO+ / +BEORN ON (retrograde). Only 2-3 examples are known to be in private ownership, none of which are in "problem-free" condition. Uniquely for its time, this highly interesting type replaced the standard portrait of the king with the Lamb of God on the obverse and a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit and peace on the reverse. It was introduced in England by Æthelred II in c. 1009, and has been interpreted as a "prayer in silver" appealing for divine protection against the devastating Viking invasions. Ironically, the type was adopted by King Cnut and enjoyed considerable popularity in Denmark throughout the reign of Svend Estridsen. Estimate: €3,000 - €4,000. Provenance: From the L.E.
