Delicate Vintage Ring with Garnets in Yellow Gold, c. 1975

What glows so impressively here are red garnets of exceptionally fine quality. The nine gemstones are hand-faceted; their large table allows the eye to gaze deep into them. The stones form a strict grid, yet are arranged into a graceful blossom. Garnets appear in jewellery from nearly every era. In the late Roman period, they were set in gold; in the 19th century, they were assembled in large numbers in Bohemia to form stars and necklaces. During the Rococo period, they were cut into flat tablets, and in the late 19th century, large almandine cabochons were particularly popular in Great Britain. The garnets in this ring have a warm, dark red colour that is less garish than the red of a ruby. The combination with the warm, slightly reddish gold beautifully highlights the colour of the gemstones. The ring, dating from the 1970s, is in very good condition and fits comfortably on the finger.
