Delicate Gold Necklace with Amethysts, British, c. 1920

Jewellery featuring delicate individual designs and colored gemstones set in yellow gold was all the rage at the beginning of the 20th century, particularly in Great Britain. The designs were similar to diamond-set evening jewelry made of platinum, but because they were crafted in gold and set with subtle gemstones, they were also suitable for daytime wear. The necklace shown here may have been worn by a British lady around 1920 when attending a tea party. Brilliant-cut diamonds were not considered appropriate for such an occasion. If one still wished to demonstrate style and fashion sense, light gold jewellery set with beautiful yet comparatively modest amethysts was ideal: one could hardly have found a more suitable piece of jewellery. This delicate necklace is very good in condition and brings a touch of old-world English elegance into the present day. It came to us from London.
