De Porceleyne Fles

An exceptional antique wall plate from the renowned Dutch manufacturer De Porceleyne Fles in Delft, fashioned in 1897. The impressive, entirely hand-painted in cobalt blue winter landscape depicts an idyllic Dutch scene with majestic windmills, a winter watercourse, small boats, and picturesque houses. A delicate bridge and scattered figures lend the portrayal a besondere liveliness and spatial depth. The composition, according to the signature “naar J. H. Wijsmuller,” is based on a design by the Dutch landscape painter Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller (1855–1925), who is especially known for his atmospheric landscapes, windmills, and wintry views. What is particularly fascinating is the finely graded cobalt blue painting, with which the wintry atmosphere, the gentle light of the sky, and the reflections on the water have been impressively captured. The rear factory mark of De Porceleyne Fles, along with the annual letter S, confirm the dating to 1897 and thus the piece’s creation in the late 19th century. A special historic charm is added by the patina that has developed over more than 125 years. The delicate crazing of the glaze is partially highlighted by warm, brownish inclusions, through which the natural aging of the surface becomes visible. This characteristic patination is well compatible with the piece’s great age and underscores its authentic historical aura, without in itself proving age. An impressive collectible from the golden age of Delft pottery, combining the traditional craftsmanship of De Porceleyne Fles with the atmospheric Dutch landscape painting of the 19th century. The item will be wrapped in padded foil and surrounded by bio- Styrofoam inside a double-walled box, shipped via DHL.
