DAVID COX, SEN, O.W.S. (BRITISH 1783-1859) VIEW OF HADDON HALL Pencil and watercolour, heightened with touches of white Signed (lower left) 11 x 16cm (4¼ x 6¼in.) Provenance: Presented to Keith and Dorothy Lamb, by Trenchard Cox, Curator of Birmingham Art Gallery & Director of Victoria and Albert Museum, London The collection of Russell Worby Exhibited: Birmingham, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, David Cox Centenary Exhibition, 1959, no. 41. lent by Keith Lamb Haddon Hall was a favourite subject of David Cox's, he visited there on six occasions between 1831 and 1850. Haddon had been the Tudor seat of the Dukes of Rutland but had been supplanted by Belvoir Castle since the 1740s and its survival, relatively untouched, gave it an air of romantic nostalgia that appealed to the artist.
