DANIEL MACLISE (Cork, Ireland, 1806 - London, 1870) - Dance of young

Descriptio Watercolor on paper. Dimensions: 24 × 16 cm. Dimensions with frame: 38 × 30 cm. This figurative and romantic work depicts a festive outdoor scene featuring a group of young women dancing before the gaze of several male figures, set against a mountainous landscape with an evocative and poetic atmosphere. The composition unfolds within a broad natural environment defined by rock formations, vegetation, and a horizon of soft blue tones, upon which a luminous disc stands out, suggesting the presence of the moon. In the center of the scene, several female figures adorned in flowing white and pink dresses perform a dance of light and elegant movements, their arms raised and their bodies arranged in different positions that create a dynamic visual rhythm. Some of the young women hold branches and garlands, while others appear to be participating in a celebration of a popular, literary, or allegorical nature. Their long, dark hair, the delicate folds of their garments, and the arrangement of their bodies in motion lend the composition a remarkable sense of lightness and spontaneity. On either side of the central group appear several male figures dressed in traditionally inspired attire, some seated on rocks and others standing, watching the dance. On the far left, a male figure stands out, holding an elongated object, possibly a musical instrument, while on the right, several men wearing turbans and flowing robes are grouped together, introducing an oriental dimension to the representation. The landscape, dominated by rugged mountains, gentle hills, and wild vegetation, blends harmoniously with the human figures through a chromatic palette of ochre, pink, blue, and green tones. The watercolor technique allows for delicate transparencies and gradations of light, especially visible in the women’s garments, the sky, and the rocky surfaces, while the slightly blurred outlines contribute to creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The composition exhibits characteristics related to the artistic universe of Daniel Maclise, a prominent 19th-century Irish painter associated with British Romanticism, whose work is distinguished by its interest in historical scenes, literary subjects, narrative compositions, and the highly expressive depiction of human figures. His artistic language combines meticulous compositional construction with a remarkable sensitivity to movement, gesture, and the theatricality of the scenes, elements that can be appreciated in the arrangement of the figures and in the narrative character of this watercolor. The work also shows affinities with certain compositions by William Blake (1757-1827), especially in the representation of ethereal female figures and the creation of poetic atmospheres.as well as with the paintings of Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), due to the dynamism of the figures, the interest in orientalizing clothing, and the expressive use of color. Parallels can also be drawn with certain works by John William Waterhouse (1849-1917), due to the prominence of the female figure and the integration of literary and allegorical themes into idealized landscapes. These references constitute stylistic affinities and do not imply an attribution of authorship. The work bears a handwritten signature in the lower left corner, apparently corresponding to the surname Maclise, the authenticity of which requires documentary verification or direct examination. It is presented framed, with a wide cream-colored passe-partout and a dark wood molding decorated with gilt ornamental motifs, which enhances the historicist character of the composition.
