Since both Jaguar and Daimler were under BMC at the time, the DS420 was largely designed by Jaguar and shared crucial components with the brand, including the famed Jaguar XK six-cylinder engine, gearbox and suspension. The DS420 is an iconic state car body style that was widely used for royal families and government services in the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden, among others.
