D. Witschkanow - ►„Where Desire Leaves a BLACK Trace“ – Triptychon № I (XXL)

►“Where Desire Leaves a BLACK Trace” – Original Triptych Original, hand-made triptych by Daniel Witschkanow, 2026 Description “Where Desire Leaves a Trace” unites three expressive portraits into an intense study of closeness, sensuality, and human vulnerability. The three faces do not appear as classic, clearly bounded portraits, but arise from powerful black brushstrokes, transparent traces, and open white surfaces. As a result, the figures appear simultaneously physically present and almost fleeting. The two outer panels show profile portraits, while the central portrait confronts the viewer more directly. This arrangement creates a special tension: three individual states stand side by side yet seem part of the same emotional narrative. Closed or half-closed eyes, pronounced lips, and the dynamic movements of the black paint lend the ensemble a sensual, almost dreamlike atmosphere. What is especially captivating is the interplay between controlled figuration and spontaneous dissolution. From a distance the faces are clearly perceptible; up close they dissolve into expressive brushstrokes, overlays, and free movements. In this way the triptych develops a strong effect of longing, memory, intimacy, and transience. About the image The focus is less on the identity of individual people than on an emotional state. The three faces can be read as different people – but equally as different facets of a single personality or memory. The outer figures appear inward-looking and almost transfigured, while the central face has a more intense, confrontational presence. This creates a tension between proximity and withdrawal, self-perception and encounter. The black lines and broad brushstrokes deliberately cross the boundaries of the facial contours. Hair, shadows, skin, and surroundings blend into one another. The image therefore does not tell a single, clear story, but leaves room for personal associations – from longing and intimacy to memory and emotional dissolution. Technique The triptych was executed with acrylic paint on canvas in an expressive, gestural painting style. Broad and fine brushstrokes are combined, partially smudged, overlaid, or intentionally left openly visible. Through varying intensities of paint, there are both deep black, almost massive areas and transparent and dry traces, where the structure of the canvas remains visible. These contrasts give the faces depth, movement, and an immediate painterly energy. A central aspect of the work is the interplay of deliberate control and spontaneous gesture. No line and no brushstroke can be replicated identically – making each of the three canvases a unique, fully handmade original.
