Traditional Ethiopian Orthodox hand cross or processional cross (also called yaegg masqal or Coptic cross), probably made of brass or bronze. Type object: Hand cross / blessing cross of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Features: It has an openwork diamond-shaped central section, geometric decorations and a distinctive grip that ends at the bottom in a square or stylized foot. Given the length of almost 45 cm and the substantial weight of 654 g, this object was originally designed as a processional cross or a large altar cross. Estimated age: Mid-20th century (ca. 1940 - 1970). The file and chisel marks on the shaft and the geometric cutouts are typical of active production in this period in Ethiopian craft centers (such as Addis Ababa or Axum).
