'The Cicada and the Ant' • marked 'Fables Terre de Fer' • Creil-Montereau • ca. 1880–1920 Fable tile after La Fontaine, 'The Cicada and the Ant', tile number 2 from a French series of twelve. The ant, a woman with a spinning wheel, approaches the cricket who spent the summer with her lute. The print is hand-colored in sky blue, mustard yellow, olive green and lilac. A conversation piece at table or on the wall, as the French intended their 'assiettes parlantes'. For this object a Buy Now price has also been set, for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting. Description: A framed central panel with a windmill in the background. Two side panels show men from behind, by a haystack and with a staff and sheaf on their way. The line work is printed in sepia and then hand-colored; where the color goes just outside the line you can see the brush. The edge bears branches and two birds, outlined with a gold line. Creighton University (USA) preserves in its fable collection seven of the twelve boards, including this same number 2. About the maker: The Creil faience factories, on the Oise, and Montereau, on the Seine, merged in 1840. With about 1,400 workers they became one of the largest earthenware companies in France. They produced 'terre de fer': thin, hard, white earthenware for the French dining table. Print boards with a fable or a song were popular at table. The name Creil et Montereau remained in use until 1920. In the interior: Suitable for a plate-wall in a French country house style or a brocante interior, alongside other print boards. The light field lets the scene come through. Condition: Good, vintage condition. Mirror: a light, matte spot about 3 x 2 cm at the top right of the central panel. Bottom: a rust-brown glaze spot and light signs of use. No cracks or flaking observed. See the pictures. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food. In one glance: Material: fine earthenware ('terre de fer'), printed decoration, hand-colored Dimensions and weight: h 1.5 x diameter 20.5 cm, 280 grams Brand: stamped 'Déposé', intertwined monogram, 'Fables Terre de Fer', plus two small marks Dating: ca. 1880–1920 Origin: private collection, Western Europe Attribution and sources: Attributed to Creil et Montereau. Decoration, numbering and base text correspond to number 2 in the Creighton collection, which assigns the series to this factory. The monogram reads as an M and a C. Choisy-le-Roi notes with H B and thus rejects it. Shipping: Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured shipping with Track and Trace. See the feedback from previous buyers. You can follow me above by bookmarking my page and clicking follow (heart) next to 'DECADERS Gallery'.
