Cornflowers line the path by Gary Westall Painting 11.8 x 15.8 :: I painted this work en plein air during the annual plein air event held in K?opotowo Poland. Standing at the edge of a field road I was treated to this sweeping view of the landscape. I was particularly struck by the fields lined with blooming cornflowers which drew my gaze all the way to the horizon. As I painted the light and clouds were constantly shifting bathing the fields in ever-changing shades of color. The bright yellow of the grain fields the intense blue of the cornflowers and the vast summer sky formed a harmonious composition that immediately inspired me to paint. With this painting I wanted to capture the quiet beauty of the rural landscape—its vastness its colors and the special sense of peace one feels when the gaze can wander unobstructed across the fields into the distance.
