Cornelis Martin (1567-1621) - Margherita di Male — Les genealogies

Cornelis Martin (1567-1621) - Margherita di Male — Les genealogies

This magnificent copper engraving constitutes the historical and ceremonial portrait of Margaret II of Flanders, also known as Margaret of Male (indicated at the bottom as Marguerite, Comtesse de Flandre, with the superscribed de Male), depicted together with her consort Philip the Bold, included in the volume Les genealogies, et anciennes descentes des forestiers et comtes de Flandre, published in Antwerp around 1580 by the Flemish scholar Cornelis Martin. The scene shows the countess full-length on the left, dressed in a sumptuous blue gown draped with red revers, a necklace and a crown resting on a long and elegant reticello veil. To her right, the duke consort wears a rich metallic armor partially covered by a heraldic surcoat decorated with small black rampant lions, completed by a pink mantle and a dark touch on the head. The two spouses jointly support two heraldic shields: the upper one displays a red rampant lion on a gold field surrounded by small hearts or drops, while the lower one shows the famous black rampant lion on a gold field, historical symbol of the County of Flanders. In the left background, there is a hint of a Flemish hilly landscape enriched by a medieval crenellated fortress. The plate, originally drawn by the painter Pieter Baltens and printed with extraordinary copper-engraved definition, bears at the top the heading "Le vintiesme Conte de Flandre" next to the page number 93 and the plate number 20 at the bottom right, with the typographic signature N 2 in the lower margin. The specimen's merit is magnificently completed by a refined contemporaneous watercolor coloring executed entirely by hand, which gives great brilliance to the tones of the garments, to the gold of the emblems and to the historical details of the couple. Dimensions 18 x 26 cm Verrà spedito per mezzo di corriere
