2013 - Albrecht Dürer "Rhinozeros" - Silver with etched copper inlay This silver coin features an etched copper inlay, which very impressively reflects Dürer's craftsmanship (1471-1528). He was not only a great painter of his time, but also a brilliant copper engraver. One of his best-known works is the "Rhinozeros woodcut." He used as a model an Indian rhinoceros that was sent to Lisbon in 1515 as a gift from India to King Manuel I of Portugal. The living rhinoceros caused a great stir in Lisbon and far beyond. Albrecht Dürer never saw the animal alive and created his masterpiece based on a sketch.
