Bracelets were the great fashion of Art Deco. "There was never a time when bracelets were as popular as they are today. It seems as if every girl and woman wears a bracelet, and many ladies of good taste wear two and even more in attractive combinations," reads an American jewellery catalog from around 1925. Film stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer and Metropolis star Brigitte Helm were the role models for this fashion when they had themselves photographed with the coveted accessories: their heads resting on their arms, the elegant bracelets prominently displayed. Here we show a studio photograph for the 1932 film The Blonde Venus, in which Dietrich wears three matching bracelets. The fact that two matching bracelets from this period have survived together is unusual. We were therefore all the more delighted when we discovered the pieces presented here in Berlin. They are two almost completely identical bracelets made of smaller square and larger hexagonal elements that are richly set with diamonds. Bridges with baguette diamonds connect the elements, which caress the wrist so softly and comfortably. The special highlight of the pair, however, is that the bracelets can also be worn as a choker necklace! This form of necklace was also a major fashion in this era of extremes: a necklace either had to be very short or very long. The diamonds in old cuts - most of which were probably cut in the 19th century - together weigh more than 26 carats. They are all set in platinum, which was a particular luxury at the time the bracelet was created around 1930: the price of platinum was up to six times higher than that of gold at the time. We have commissioned an independent gemological report on the quality of the diamonds, which is enclosed with the bracelets.
