Conti Ferniani Faenza - Conti Ferniani in terraglia...

Rare Pair of Ancient Earthware Dishes – Manifattura dei Conti Ferniani (Faenza) – Decor “A Giardino e Colonna Spezzata” – Second Half of the 18th Century (Eighteenth Century) Historical Importance and the Philosophy of the 18th Century I present at auction a refined lot of Italian antique ceramics: a splendid coordinated pair of antique earthware dishes, attributed to the renowned Manifattura dei Conti Ferniani of Faenza, one of the most important elite production centers in 18th-century Europe. Dating from the second half of the 18th century, this pair embodies the bucolic, archaeological, and classicist taste that dominated the salons of Italian nobility of the era. Moreover, these dishes carry the fascinating philosophy of pre-industrial manufacture: a golden age when the material was precious and every piece that came out of the furnace, even when marked by fire, was loved, preserved, and never discarded. Both dishes host the extraordinary and highly sought-after polychrome painted motif known as “a Giardino con vaso e colonna spezzata” (or simply “the broken column”), one of the decoratives that achieved the greatest success and prestige in Faenza’s 18th-century production. The Cavetto (Center): The rich composition rests on a patch of ground and shows a truncated and broken classical column placed on a pedestal, flanked by a large garden vase. From this, sinuous flowering branches and lush shrubs with abundant detail unfold. The Tesa (Edge): The profile is elegantly wavy and lobed (ribbed), finished along the entire perimeter with small floral bouquets alternating with a refined geometric lattice (or lace) motif. Technique: The lively color palette (characterized by the typical shades of green, purple-red, ochre, blue, and manganese brown) testifies to the complex and skilled technique of high-fire glaze on earthware, capable of keeping colors bright after more than two centuries. A note for collectors: Although the decorative scheme is strictly the same, since these are fully hand-painted works by the ceramic masters of the period, each dish presents several small unique variations in the underglaze, a detail that certifies their absolute workmanship and the unique piece as one-of-a-kind. Technical Sheet of the Lot. Type: Pair of antique parade/collection plates. Manufacture: Formal attribution to the Manifattura dei Conti Ferniani (Faenza). Era: Second half of the 18th century. Material: Antique earthware Decor: “A Giardino con vaso e colonna spezzata” executed in high-fire. Mark: Absent (consistent with Ferniani production of the period) Diameter approx.: 24.5 cm each Being authentic 18th-century antique pieces of earthware that have survived over 250 years of history, the pair presents in good overall condition for its era. For maximum transparency and meticulous collecting precision, the following details (well documented in photos) are noted: Physiological signs of time: As is absolutely natural to find in ceramic ware of this period, the dishes may show some minute cracks, classic tiny edge flakes and chips along the rim and the tesa, and insignificant superficial glaze flaking. The fascinating firing defect: On one of the two dishes, a mark is visible that to an untrained eye might mistakenly seem like an old repair. In fact, it is a characteristic firing defect from the era or a slip in handling that occurred directly inside the 18th-century furnace. This detail does not detract at all from the extraordinary painted quality, integrity, and perfect structural stability of the dish. On the contrary, it gives the object that old, authentic, and romantic flavor, bearing witness to a time when nothing was wasted or destroyed and every piece retained its use and artistic value. Given the extreme fragility and rarity of the pair of dishes, shipping will be handled with maximum-security protective packaging: Each dish will be individually isolated in protective sheets and bubble wrap and other suitable materials, then placed in a rigid box. Service provided exclusively by a premier international express courier with tracking code provided immediately after dispatch. The lot will travel with full insurance cover for the entire winning value."
