COLONIST WITH SLAVE Africa Work from the colonial era, 19th / 20th century Painted wood H. 41 cm – W. 36 cm A rare depiction of a (European) colonist dressed in traditional attire, holding a slave on a leash, the rope binding the unfortunate man’s hands and neck. The term “colonial art” derives from the word “colonial” ” and was coined to describe a unique style of African art, born of the encounter with Europeans in the 15th century and a distinct manner of depicting them that emerged among West African artists in the late 19th century. See a very similar sculpture depicting a man holding a female slave on a leash, No. 2014.122.1ab, in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, D.C., acquired in Ghana. Another is illustrated by Alain Weill in *L'Art dit Colon: Un aspect méconnu de l'art africain* (Albin Michel, 2021).
