Colin Jones (1936-2021) - Race Riots — États-Unis, 1963

Colin Jones (1936-2021) Race Riots — United States, 1963 Coverage for the British newspaper The Observer - “Photographed and Printed by Colin Jones”: stamp indicating that the photograph was taken and printed by Colin Jones. - Handwritten signature: attributable to Colin Jones, accompanied by the note “Vintage”. - “Race Riots 1963”: handwritten identification of the report. - “Birmingham Alabama USA”: location of the shooting. - “1963”: year of the photograph. - “Copyright Reserved”: rights protection stamp. - “No Neg”: handwritten note possibly meaning “No Negative”, to be confirmed. The mention “Vintage” is particularly important: it presents the print as a period print. The scene seems almost ordinary: some police officers are talking, others are resting on the sidewalk. Yet, behind this apparent calm, the violence of an America confronting segregation and the struggles for civil rights can be discerned. With his photojournalist eye, Colin Jones captures a suspended moment, where the composition, the attitudes and the gazes are enough to tell a time. Black and white photograph, 1963. Title: Race Riots — Colin Jones / The Observer. Location to be confirmed.
