Coletta van den Keere - Frontispice - Portrait de Gerard...

Old copper-engraved plate, hand-enhanced: double portrait of Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius, published in 1633 in the Mercator-Hondius atlas. Engraved by Coletta van den Keere, widow of Jodocus Hondius. In the left, Mercator is shown wearing a bonnet and a long beard, posing a compass on a terrestrial globe. Hondius, on the right, is dressed in a fur-trimmed robe and a pleated ruff, and holds a second globe. On the table are an open atlas, scrolls, an inkwell with its quill, and measuring instruments. Behind them, a bookshelf of bound books surmounts the table, and a map of Europe is hanging on the wall. The whole is framed by an architecture with pilasters, crowned by an armillary sphere, a reclining animal, two celestial globes on pedestals, and crossed instruments. A lower cartouche, adorned with a mascaron, gives in Latin the birth and death dates of the two men. The antique color scheme blends pink, green, yellow, orange and bluish-gray. The verso is printed with Latin texts (epigrams in honor of Mercator and Hondius). - Dimensions: sheet: 56.5 x 47.4 cm; plate: 45.1 x 38.5 cm - Condition: Good overall for an engraving of this period. There is a vertical central fold and some stains. See photos for details. Atlas Mercator-Hondius - The atlas named “Mercator-Hondius” continues the work of Gerard Mercator, whose copper plates were bought back by Jodocus Hondius in 1604. This French edition of 1633 is signed by his son Henricus Hondius and his son-in-law Joannes Janssonius, who augmented it with new maps. Gerard Mercator – A Flemish geographer, cartographer and globe-maker (Rupelmonde, 1512 – Duisburg, 1594). He is known for the map projection that bears his name, presented on his world map of 1569 and still used on marine charts. His atlas was published posthumously by his family in 1595. Jodocus Hondius – A Flemish engraver, cartographer and publisher (Wakken, 1563 – Amsterdam, 1612). He bought Mercator’s copper plates in 1604 and, from 1606, published an expanded edition of the atlas, enriched with about thirty new maps. His sons Jodocus II and Henricus later continued the atlas edition. Coletta van den Keere – An engraver and publisher, she was the sister of Petrus van den Keere, author of the famous Leo Belgicus. Trained by her father, she is credited with the engraving of the famous double portrait of Hondius and Mercator, which she included in the Mercator-Hondius atlas from 1613. A full-fledged editor, she continued the family business after the death of her husband.
