Claude Landry - Malleus Maleficarum

LOTTO — MALLEUS MALEFICARUM, 1620 INSTITORIS, Henricus; SPRENGER, Jacobus. Malleus Maleficarum, maleficas et earum haeresin framea conterens, ex variis auctoribus compilatus, & in tres tomos juste distributus. Lugduni, sumptibus Claudii Landry, 1620. Important sixteenth-century edition of the famous Malleus Maleficarum, a monumental collection devoted to witchcraft, demonology, magic and heresy. The work, originally associated with Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger, was reprinted several times during the 16th and 17th centuries and constitutes one of the best-known testimonies of European demonological literature. A multi-volume copy consisting of three volumes bound together in two volumes, in Latin, with a complex editorial structure divided into multiple parts and with pagination specific to the individual sections. The volumes total approximately 1,900 pages according to the physical count of the specimen. The work is distinguished by typographic title pages printed in black and red, elegant printer’s marks and woodcut illustrations, ornate initials and the distinctive seventeenth-century typography. The photographs also document the presence of texts and treatises dedicated to the nature of demons and magical practices, including the “De natura daemonum.” The two volumes preserve ancient full leather bindings, with raised bands and gold decorations on the spines. The paper shows natural darkening and the characteristic alterations typical of old paper. There are handwritten annotations, ancient folios, traces of ownership and bookplates applied to the preliminary leaves, elements of particular interest for the provenance history of the specimen. State of conservation: overall coherent with the age of the volumes; bindings with evident signs of use, abrasions and losses of material to the backs and edges, headbands worn, browned papers with stains and signs of use. There are also some imperfections and material gaps to be checked during collating. A specimen to be rebound integrally. Edition: Lyon, Claude Landry, 1620. Language: Latin. Format: in-8°. Composition: 3 volumes in 2. Pages: approximately 1,900 in total, according to the physical count of the specimen. Binding: full leather contemporary or antique, with decorations and spine raised bands. Collation: (71), 805; (85), 1045 Rare seventeenth-century set of notable historical, bibliographical and collecting interest. THE BOOKS WERE EXHIBITED AT THE VENICE SECRET EXHIBITION AT PALAZZO ZAGURI IN VENICE
