Classic Entourage Ring with Natural Ruby & Diamonds, Vienna, c. 1980

What does “the” typical engagement ring look like? Two possibilities come to mind: First, a solitaire diamond in white gold or platinum. It focuses entirely on the brilliance of a diamond—white and bright—and has come back into fashion, especially in recent years. In the decades prior, it was the entourage ring that defined the ideal engagement ring. It was the quintessential engagement ring of the 1970s and 1980s. Entourage rings, usually made of high-karat white gold, surround a precious colored gemstone with a halo of sparkling diamonds. Here, too, diamonds are a central part of the message the ring conveys: diamonds are symbols of eternity and the everlasting promise made with the ring. However, they do not stand alone; rather, their primary purpose is to showcase the central colored gemstone to its best advantage, providing the perfect setting to highlight its colour and beauty. This particular entourage ring features a stunning, deep-red ruby weighing approximately 1.20 carats at its center. Eight fine brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of 0.72 carats, featuring good colour and clarity, accompany the natural ruby and make the ring a striking example of this type of engagement ring. The gemstones are set in white gold. The independent appraisal report from the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal, shown here, has confirmed the value. It is included with the ring, which, according to its hallmark, was crafted in Vienna.
