Circle of the Sea: Creations from Oceania - Asmat

Being offered at auction is a rare and exceptionally thorough standard work on the tribal art of the Pacific: "Circle of the Sea: Creations from Oceania". This authoritative publication appeared on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Museum of Natural History (Roger Williams Park, Providence, Rhode Island) with textual expertise from the renowned tribal art expert and gallery owner Norman Hurst. The book documents and analyzes an impressive selection of top pieces from the Oceanic collection and forms an essential source of information for collectors, appraisers, and enthusiasts of ethnography and tribal art. Cross-References & Scientific Context: This work fits seamlessly with and serves as an indispensable reference alongside leading publications and exhibition catalogs within Oceanic art history, such as; “Art of the Pacific” by Anne d'Alleva "Splendid Isolation: Art of Easter Island" (Metropolitan Museum of Art) by Eric Kjellgren “Solomon Islands Art: The Conru Collection” by Kevin Conru “Power and Prestige: The Arts of Island Melanesia" also by Norman Hurst This specific lot is in absolute Mint condition / deadstock. The book comes directly from an old, unused stock and has never been read or looked at. To ensure authenticity and to take the auction photos, the book has been handled with extreme care; the photos were deliberately taken from an angle smaller than 100° to as little stress as possible on the spine and binding. What is special about this copy is the tangible authenticity: the book still carries the original smell of the printing house and the pages stick together slightly from decades of storage. Note regarding the exterior: on both the front and back, light blocking damage (creasing) is visible. This is an authentic production flaw originating directly from the printer, caused by the sheets being stacked when the ink was still lightly damp. This gives the book its characteristic vintage 'deadstock' character and testifies that the book has remained untouched since. A unique opportunity for building or expanding a specialized art-historical library. Shipping is conducted with Track & Trace. When purchasing multiple lots I apply a fair adjustment to the shipping costs, appropriate to the total volume and insured value. Collection possible in The Hague, Benoordehout (2596GN).
