Christian Thørrestrup (1823–1892) - Portrait of an Elderly Danish Woman

Christian Thørrestrup (1823–1892) Portrait of an Elderly Danish Woman in Traditional Dress ca. 1865 Oil on canvas A finely observed 19th-century Danish portrait depicting an elderly woman in traditional dress, rendered with a restrained palette and a sober, realistic treatment characteristic of Scandinavian portraiture of the period. The sitter is shown against a dark neutral background, allowing particular emphasis on the face, white head covering and the subtle modelling of the features. The work has an intimate, almost documentary quality and reflects the Danish Realist tradition of the mid-19th century. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. Dimensions: Painting: 22 × 19 cm Framed: 35 × 32 cm The work shows age-related craquelure and wear consistent with its period. A charming and characterful example of 19th-century Danish portrait painting.
