Inventory: circle of Christian Georg Schütz (1718–1791) Title: River Landscape with Boats Technique and support: marouflage on panel Dimensions: 24.5 × 34 cm; with frame 32 × 42 cm Signature: unsigned Stylistic positioning: late Baroque and Rococo Christian Georg Schütz the Elder was born in 1718 in Flörsheim am Main and died in 1791 in Frankfurt am Main. From 1743 he was based in Frankfurt. He specialized in landscapes and cityscapes, including river landscapes with buildings and figurative still life. In his workshop, family members and other assistants also worked. Object description A broad river forms the central motif of a mountainous landscape. On the left a sailing ship with several crew members; on the right lies a second sailing ship at a dock. In the foreground there is a smaller boat with two figures and cargo. Along the right bank stand figures by a low building and a round stone tower. The elevated left bank bears houses and towers, alternated with trees. Further away are buildings and successive mountain ranges. Dark vegetation and a broken tree trunk frame the foreground. A goat stands at the right edge. The water and the distance are predominantly blue-gray, in contrast to brown and olive-green banks. Light sails and small red and blue accents in the clothing interrupt this color distribution. Technique and material analysis The painted support is marouflaged on panel. Water and sky are worked out with fine, predominantly horizontal brushstrokes. Architecture, rigging and figures are indicated with thin lines and compact color touches. In the foliage lie lighter strokes over darker areas. Locally fine craquelure is visible. Small interruptions of the paint layer reveal a warm-brown underlying layer. The surface bears a recently applied varnish layer. Composition and formal analysis The elevated viewpoint provides an overview of the river and both banks. The dark foreground leads to the lighter water, after which diminishing contrasts and increasingly cool tones suggest distance to the mountains. The river narrows toward the center of the background. The two sailing ships divide the central plan. Their masts and sails form vertical and diagonal accents against the horizontal water streaks. The round tower on the right provides counterbalance to the built-up height on the left. The small figures support scale and concentrate activity on the water and at the dock. Stylistic and art-historical context The combination of a bordered foreground, a broad river valley, dispersed architecture and small figures aligns with the landscape tradition of the late Baroque and Rococo. The gradual transition from dark, warmer foreground areas to a light, blue-gray distance supports this stylistic positioning. The attribution to the circle of Schütz places the work within this context without designating it as the artist’s own handiwork. Comparable artists Herman Saftleven, Jan Griffier, Johann Alexander Thiele, Claude Joseph Vernet Condition The panel is stable. Small pinpoint losses of paint are scattered over the surface; locally there is fine craquelé. The painting contains retouchings and has been recently superficially cleaned and given a varnish layer. Conclusion This unsigned river landscape from the circle of Christian Georg Schütz stylistically aligns with eighteenth-century landscape painting of the late Baroque and Rococo. A more precise dating has not been established. The marouflaged-on-panel work has a stable support, with minor paint losses, local craquelé and retouchings. Cleaning and varnish application are part of the recent treatment.
