“CHOUCROUTE GARNIE!” - Lot 4

“CHOUCROUTE GARNIE!” [STAGNER?]. Choucroute garnie! [Strasbourg?], Silbermann Press, [circa 1870–1871]. A satirical black-and-white lithograph depicting three caricatured heads emerging from a barrel topped with a lid; the central figure wears a helmet whose face shows midnight. The inscription “CHOUCROUTE GARNIE!” appears on the barrel. Signature on the plate is difficult to read, probably Stagner. A German or Alsatian caricature related to the Franco-Prussian War, playing on the motif of sauerkraut as a regional symbol. Horizontal fold down the center, paper browned, small tears, and minor damage to the margins.
