The body of the vase is decorated with a vivid hand-painted narrative scene in Famille Rose enamels. It depicts literati and sages (likely the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove or similar scenes of scholarly life) in a natural landscape. A bearded scholar, seated beneath an ancient pine and a maple, discusses with a young attendant while consulting a scroll. The scene is rich in detail, from the intricate patterns of their robes to the stratified rocks and carefully rendered foliage. The back of the vase shows additional figures in a landscape, maintaining the same high painting quality.
