CHINA. Sinkiang (as Sungarei). Brass 4 Mace (Miscals) Pattern, ND

A Stunningly Rare Pattern for "Sungarei" CHINA. Sinkiang (as Sungarei). Brass 4 Mace (Miscals) Pattern, ND (1897). Esslingen (Otto Beh) Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-55. cf. L&M-830 (silver); cf. K-1031-34 (for other pattern denominations; unlisted in 4 Mace); KM-Pn45; cf. WS-1310 (silver); cf. SGSC-222 & p. 215 (for other versions in silver, silvered bronze, and bronze). A majestic RARITY from the Sinkiang series of patterns presented as "Sungarei," this off-metal striking in brass features somewhat mottled olive-yellow hues and a great deal of radiant brilliance emanating from the protected areas. The strike is sharp and captivating, as one would expect of its pattern status, and the level of wear across the high points remains at an extreme minimum. Sinkiang Gold And Silver Coin Catalog (SGSC) mentions just three examples of this type known: one in silver, one in silvered bronze, and one in copper, while also noting a fourth in brass that had not been seen in hand. This new discovery represents another of the type in brass, and stands as one of just two such 4 Mace certified by PCGS--the other being a silver specimen striking. As such, the extremely difficult nature of this stunning piece becomes exceptionally clear. A colossal and immensely important offering, and one of the loftiest from the entire Sinkiang series. Estimate: $75,000 - $150,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
