CHINA. Boo-su (Ministry of Finance). 1 Cash. 1820-1850. Daoguang (1820-1850) - Value: 1 Cash. - Reign: Daoguang (1820-1850). - Year: 1820-1850. - Inscriptions: Obverse: 道光通寶 (Dao Guang Tong Bao). Reverse: 寶蘇 (Boo-su), indicating the mint of Suzhou under the Ministry of Finance. - Grade: XF45 (GBCA). Bronze coin cast during the reign of Emperor Daoguang of the Qing dynasty, with the characteristic central square hole used in Chinese cash coins for threading on cords. The obverse bears the legend Dao Guang Tong Bao in regular script, while the reverse shows the mint mark Boo-su, corresponding to Suzhou. The style is sober and functional, typical of imperial Chinese coinage emissions of the 19th century. Despite surface corrosion and encrustations typical of circulation and prolonged burial, the principal characters remain identifiable. The reliefs retain enough definition to justify the XF45 grade, highlighting a dark patina with light mineral deposits distributed on both sides. This piece belongs to a period of economic difficulties and growing foreign pressure on the Qing Empire, shortly before the events that would lead to the First Opium War.
