CHINA--EMPIRE. Lot of (3). 1909 4 1/2% Imperial Chinese Government Anglo-French (Peking-Hankow Railway) Loan of 1908. Bonds for 20 and 100 Pounds. K-180 to K182. Fine to Very Fine. Issued by HSBC (20 and 100 Pounds) and Banque de l'Indo-Chine (20 Pounds). A complete set of this series. According to Kuhlmann, only 250, 1200 and 6250 bonds remain outstanding for each, respectively. The HSBC 20 Pounds is therefore extremely rare. The Qing government issued this loan through Anglo-French banks to buy back the Beijing Hankou Railway from its Belgian owners, who had built and managed the line since the late 1890s.
