Charles Mannier (1823-1855) - Vache près d'un cours d'eau

Cow near a river – Oil on panel signed – 38.5 × 69 cm Beautiful oil on panel signed C. Mannier depicting a rural landscape animated by a cow by the edge of a stream. This bucolic composition reveals a vast meadow bordered by trees with autumn foliage, in a soft and slightly misty atmosphere. In the foreground, a tranquil stretch of water subtly reflects the silhouettes of the trees, while a solitary cow adds a living presence to this serene landscape. The artist pays particular attention to the treatment of vegetation, to the nuances of the sky and to the effects of light. The palette, dominated by deep greens, golden ochres and bluish greys, sensitively conveys the atmosphere of the countryside as autumn approaches. The fineness of the details, especially in the foliage and the reflections on the water, as well as the balanced construction of the composition, testify to careful pictorial work, in keeping with the tradition of naturalist landscape painting. The work is signed at the bottom left Oil on panel measuring 38.5 × 69 cm, presented in a warm-toned, carved wooden frame. The whole shows signs of age and use, notably some marks on the frame.
