CHARLES EDWARD HALLÉ (BRITISH, 1846–1914) THE FOUNTAIN Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 109 x 45.5cm (42¾ x 17¾in.) Exhibited: New Gallery, 1897, no 143 Literature: The Morning Post, 10 May 1897, p 3 Sir Charles Hallé, pianist and conductor and father of the painter, brought his two year old son, the future artist, to London from Paris fleeing the revolution of 1848. Hallé junior spent much of his young life in Italy. In 1877 he and Joseph Comyns Carr with Sir Coutts Lindsay founded the Grosvenor Gallery, which quickly became the flagship of the Aesthetic Movement. When, in 1887, disputes arose over the running of the Grosvenor, Hallé and Carr withdrew and, with the support of Burne-Jones and others, opened the New Gallery in Regent Street the following year, where Hallé exhibited this typical Aesthetic Movement painting in 1897. 'Mr C E Halle sends several single-figure studies of damsels, pretty faced and attired in picturesque costumes' (review of the New Gallery exhibition in The Morning Post, 10 May 1897, p 3) Condition Report: The canvas has not been lined and is slightly slack. A small patch covering a repair is present to the upper left quadrant verso. Some minor abrasions to the extreme edges commensurate with rubbing to the frame. A small pinhole is present to the upper left corner. Scattered scuffs and superficial scratches. Inspection under UV reveals some evidence of retouching, including larger areas corresponding with the aforementioned tear to the right of the sitter's waist, around her right shoulder and hand, above the parasol and to the lower right corner. Various further small retouches are scattered throughout, including across the sitter's visage, hair, decolletage, clothing and to the background. The image presents light surface dirt.
