Charcoal by Caballero, European School, 19th Century

Descriptio Charcoal drawing on paper. Dimensions: 11 x 11 cm (unframed), 17 x 17 cm (framed). The portrait captures the face of an elderly man, rendered with loose strokes and diffuse modeling, in which economy of lines is combined with a remarkable expressive sensitivity. The use of charcoal allows the psychological depth of the subject to be explored through chiaroscuro, highlighting the shadowed areas that envelop the figure and give the whole a melancholic air. This work, agile and direct, belongs to the academic tradition of 19th-century Europe, influenced by realism and the study of human character. The artist reveals an intuitive understanding of volume and light, creating a sober and contemplative image where time and experience seem concentrated in the sitter’s gaze. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
