Ceramic vessel, Roman culture, Judea, Herodian period (63 BC - 70

Ceramic vessel, Roman culture, Judea, Herodian period (63 BC - 70

Descriptio Modeled and fired ceramic. Dimensions: 14 cm high x 15 cm in diameter. Height with base: 17 cm. This interesting ceramic vessel is attributed to the Herodian period of ancient Judea, a historical era spanning from the end of the Roman Republic to the early decades of the Empire, closely linked to the reign of Herod the Great (37-4 BCE) and the events that shaped the history of Jerusalem during the 1st century CE. The piece belongs to the pottery tradition developed in the territory of ancient Palestine during the Second Temple period, when ceramic production played a fundamental role in the daily lives of the region’s inhabitants. These types of vessels were commonly used in domestic settings for storing, preparing, or serving food and liquids, making them one of the most representative elements of the material culture of the time. Judean pottery during the Herodian period was characterized by diversified production, with forms adapted to different functional needs and manufacturing techniques that combined local traditions with influences from the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. Its historical significance lies especially in its connection to the cultural and religious context of 1st-century Judea, contemporary with Herod the Great and the origins of Christianity. Archaeological excavations carried out in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, and other settlements in the region have documented numerous everyday vessels that contribute to our understanding of domestic customs, commercial activities, and the social organization of that period. The piece is in generally good condition, with the irregularities and surface alterations typical of its archaeological nature. Provenance: Bethlehem, south of Jerusalem, Holy Land; found before 1978. Lot in international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will apply and are the responsibility of the buyer.
