A beautiful and striking green stone celt from the Lake Sentani area in West Papua. This fine example comes from Asei, a small village situated on Lake Sentani The celt is particularly attractive because of the intense natural green colour of the stone and its elegant, well-balanced form. Stone celts such as this were important objects in traditional Sentani culture and could have considerable value, both as prestigious possessions and within systems of exchange. This piece has a particularly strong visual presence. The polished green stone and simple, powerful shape make it an excellent example of the traditional stone objects of the Lake Sentani region.
