CASANOVA (Rosa) & KONZEVIK (Adriana) — Mexico: A Photographic History. A Selective Catalog of the Fototeca Nacional of the INAH Mexico, National Council for Culture and the Arts (Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes) – National Institute of Anthropology and History (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia) – Editorial RM, 2007. Large, sturdy in-4 volume, 24 × 30 cm, publisher’s full green cloth, title and Mexican eagle gilt on the front cover, with a transparent illustrated dust jacket, 296 pp., abundant photographic illustrations. First edition in English. ISBN 978-968-5208-75-8. Texts and selection by Rosa Casanova and Adriana Konzevik, with a preface by historian and art critic Olivier Debroise. An important reference work on the history of Mexican photography Published to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Fototeca Nacional, this comprehensive catalog is the first major overview of the collections of this institution, one of the most important photographic archives in Latin America. It spans the history of photography in Mexico from 1847 through the 1970s, while also serving as a true visual, social, and political history of the country. The book presents a selection from forty major collections at the Fototeca Nacional: photographs of the Mexican Revolution from the Casasola Collection, pre-Hispanic heritage, architecture, landscapes, street scenes, portraits, political and social life, indigenous peoples, and the transformations of Mexico City. Notably featured are works by Désiré Charnay, William H. Jackson, Alfred Briquet, François Aubert, C. B. Waite, Guillermo Kahlo, Tina Modotti, as well as numerous lesser-known photographers. The iconographic richness is remarkable: the publisher lists 325 photographs, including 75 in color and 250 in black-and-white or duotone. A beautiful copy. The interior is in very fresh condition. The green cloth binding and gilt lettering are well preserved. The original transparent dust jacket is present, which is a plus; it shows normal wear and tear, including some marks along the edges. Overall, however, a very satisfying set.
