S.) purchased the disc brooch from H. vd M. in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. The previous owner, H. vd M. from Leeuwarden, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands before 1990. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This compact bronze disc brooch dates to the Carolingian / Viking Age, approximately the 8th–10th century A.D. Its circular face is decorated with a strongly organised geometric composition: a broad cross divides the surface into four fields, each containing a rounded recessed element. The simplicity and symmetry of the design give the small object a distinctive and immediately recognisable visual character. Disc brooches were both functional dress accessories and pieces of personal ornament. Worn on clothing, they served to secure garments while their decorated surfaces remained prominently visible. At only 20 mm in diameter, this brooch demonstrates how early medieval metalworkers could create a clear and effective design on a remarkably small scale. The cross-shaped arrangement is particularly characteristic of the increasingly Christian visual environment of Carolingian Europe. Cross and cruciform compositions were widely employed in early medieval decorative arts, although without a documented archaeological context the precise symbolic intention of the design on this individual brooch cannot be established. Its geometric organisation nevertheless places it firmly within the artistic language of the period. The 8th–10th centuries were a transformative period in north-western Europe. Under Charlemagne (768–814), much of the Low Countries became integrated into the Carolingian world, while major rivers and the North Sea supported extensive networks of trade and communication. Dorestad, near present-day Wijk bij Duurstede, developed into one of the principal commercial centres of north-western Europe, connecting Frankish territories with England and Scandinavia. During the 9th century these same networks increasingly brought Carolingian and Scandinavian communities into direct contact. Vikings were active as raiders, traders, settlers and political actors, while jewellery, coins and other portable objects moved across considerable distances. Small bronze ornaments such as this brooch therefore belong to a material culture shaped by interconnected communities and established traditions of specialised metalworking. More than a thousand years after it was made, the brooch still preserves the deliberate geometry chosen by its maker. Its combination of practical function, compact craftsmanship and distinctive cross-shaped decoration makes it an evocative example of early medieval personal art. Once worn as part of an individual's clothing, it provides a direct and tangible connection to everyday life during the Carolingian and Viking Age."
