Campanile Giganteum Shell: The Fossil Tower of the Miocene

The species Campanile giganteum is one of the largest and most fascinating fossil shells known, belonging to the family Campanilidae. It is a marine gastropod distinguished by its imposing spiral structure, characterized by an elongated and tightly coiled form. With a length that could exceed 50 cm, Campanile giganteum represents one of the largest gastropods ever discovered in the fossil record. The shell features a conical structure with a tightly coiled spiral and an oval-shaped aperture at the base. The whorls are often smooth or weakly decorated with growth lines, reflecting a continuous and regular growth pattern. Fossils of Campanile giganteum are commonly found in limestone or marine sandstone, and the mineralization of the original shell has produced shades ranging from white to beige. Campanile giganteum lived during the Lower Miocene, about 23-16 million years ago, in a geological context dominated by shallow, biodiversity-rich seas. Fossil findings of Campanile giganteum are primarily limited to marine areas of Western Europe, such as France and Germany. This suggests that this species was endemic to a confined marine area. The displayed fossil is well-preserved, with the shell nearly complete, embedded in a matrix of marine sediments. The specimen is mounted on a base for museum display, making it ideal for observation and study.
