A perfect exercise in silence. At first glance there seems to be almost nothing. A beige canvas, at the center a small rug of folded volumes. And it is precisely this decentering, this dimensional humility, that constitutes its first powerful artistic gesture: it refuses to shout to be looked at. It’s not painting, it’s wall sculpture. 35 small wooden modules are arranged on a checkerboard, alternating, like an interweaving. Each module creates two faces: one in light, one in shadow. The work does not exist without grazing light. It is the light that chisels it, that makes that otherwise monochrome surface tremble. It is a kinetic-looking work without movement: you take a step and the shadows change, the rhythm breaks and recomposes. It recalls Fontana’s and Castellani’s minimalist sensibilities, but with a softness that is more contemporary, more wabi-sabi. And then there is the only foreign element, bottom right: a module clad in gold leaf, crumpled, imperfect. It is not a decorative detail. It is a deliberate error, a conceptual kintsugi. After 34 modules of beige rigor, of ton-sur-ton meditation, the gold arrives like a lapse, as if matter had yielded and revealed something precious beneath. It is a work about order and its necessary rupture. It speaks of architecture, of cities seen from above, of ancient fabrics. But above all it speaks of value: it teaches us that in a world wholly neutral, just a gram of true light — that matte, non-shiny gold — is enough to give meaning to the rest. It does not decorate. It inhabits. It is made for interiors that do not need to be filled, but to breathe. One of those works that the more you look at it, the less you tire, because it never gives you the same shadow twice.
