Camille Rousseau - Les élégantes de la plage ~ Deauville

Camille Rousseau — Holidaymakers by the Sea Born in Paris in 1949, Camille Rousseau is a French painter whose artistic universe evokes beach scenes and the elegance of holidaymakers from days gone by. Inspired by Impressionism, his painting favours maritime atmospheres, animated silhouettes and variations in light, with an expressive brushwork that brings his compositions to life. In this work titled Holidaymakers by the Sea, the artist depicts a group of vacationers gathered on a beach. Some are seated on the sand, while others stand or shelter beneath parasols. The silhouettes, sketched with spontaneous strokes, form a lively collective scene, with the sea in the background and a wide sky in shades of blue and grey. The palette combines sandy tones, browns and ochres in the foreground with soft blues in the sky and sea. Brighter touches in the clothing of the figures animate the whole. The loose, visible brushwork prioritises the overall impression over meticulous detail, giving the scene a spontaneous and authentic character. The work evokes the charm of holiday days by the water and a certain nostalgia for traditional seaside resorts. Its cream-and-gold frame underscores its classic character and enhances the softness of the palette.
