Toutes les enchères / Ethnographie / Caddo Engraved Long-Neck Bottle with Sawtooth Bands

Native American, Caddo. A dark, burnished bottle swells from a rounded globular body into a tall, slender cylindrical neck that flares softly at the rim. Turned from fine alluvial clay and fired in a reduction atmosphere, it wears the smoky gray-to-charcoal surface prized by Caddo potters, its sheen won through burnishing rather than slip. Fine engraved lines, pale against the darkened ground, articulate the form: two rings of a sawtooth motif encircle the base of the neck, and from them four groups of three to four lines descend vertically across the shoulder and belly, partitioning the vessel into balanced registers. Such bottles served the Caddo communities of the Trans-Mississippi South as containers for liquids and, frequently, as mortuary offerings interred with the dead. The disciplined proportions and restrained ornament attest to a mature ceramic tradition in which utility and refinement were inseparable. The Caddo peoples of what is now northeastern Texas, southwestern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana, and southeastern Oklahoma produced some of the most technically accomplished ceramics of the Mississippian world. Their engraved bottles, made by tracing fine designs into the burnished clay before firing, belong to established types (such as those grouped under Hodges Engraved and related wares) whose motifs carried cosmological meaning tied to the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex. The dark, lustrous finish resulted from carefully managed reduction firing rather than applied slip, a hallmark of the tradition. Item # 202988
