Justin, on left, and Sophia, on right, seated facing on double throne, both nimbate; he holds globus cruciger, she holds cruciform sceptre; sometimes with cross between their heads. Rev: Large M between A / N / N /O and numerals representing the regnal year; above cross; beneath, officina letter; in exergue, CON. Reference: Sear, Byzantine Coins and Their Values, type 360. — Phocas (602-610 AD). Follis (Bronze, 30 mm, 10.56 g). Obv: D N FOCA PЄR AVG. Bust facing, wearing crown with pendilia, and consular robes, and holding mappa and cross. Rev: Large XXXX; above, ANNO; to right, numerals representing the regnal year; in exergue NIKO (followed by officina letter). Justin I’s unexpected accession founded a new imperial line and restored doctrinal ties with the western Church. Justin II inherited an overextended state, abandoned costly tribute and renewed frontier war, but military reverses weakened his rule. Phocas seized power in a violent army revolt; repression and renewed invasions deepened the imperial crisis, and his overthrow ended this turbulent phase.
