Toutes les enchères / Art Ancien / Byzantine Bronze Silver ring with geometric engraving...

Byzantine silver ring with geometric engraving, approx. 7th–9th century CE. Era: Byzantine period, probably circa 7th–9th century CE Material: Silver Ring size/ measurements: Ring size approx. 59–60 (inner diameter approx. 18.5–19 mm) Weight: 3.38 g Condition: Age-appropriate, well preserved; noticeable surface wear due to age and use. The engraving on the ring plate is clearly visible. There is an old fracture/ separation at a transition between the band and the ring plate. Authenticity: With certificate of authenticity The silver ring features a large, almost square ring plate with a geometrically structured, deeply incised decoration. Several horizontal lines divide the surface into registers. In the central area, angular, triangular, and stroke-like signs appear, forming an abstract ornamental composition. Geometric signs and highly abstracted ornaments appear on Byzantine rings both as decorative elements and as simplified personal marks or symbols. In this piece, the engraving cannot be read with certainty as writing or a concrete monogram. An interpretation as a geometric or symbolic sign is therefore preferred over a specific inscription. The flat engraved plate and its clearly delimited image field recall the design of Byzantine signet rings. Such rings could serve not only as jewelry but also for personal identification; for rings actually used as seals, the recessed engraving was pressed into wax or another soft material. Whether this ring was actually used as a seal cannot be determined with certainty. The simple band and the strictly geometric design of the plate correspond to the restrained formal language of many Byzantine pieces of jewelry. The ring is an interesting example of personal silver jewelry in which ornamental design and possibly an identifying or symbolic function were linked.
