BYZANTINE BRONZE LAMP WITH LID

Ca. AD 500 - 700. A cast bronze oil lamp with a rounded body resting on a low circular foot and an elongated, projecting nozzle with a broad, rounded tip and a circular wick hole. The upper section is fitted with a hinged lid, surmounted by a conical knob decorated with concentric mouldings. A tall, elaborately curved handle extends from the rear of the body, arching upwards and curling inwards into a volute beneath a cross-shaped finial.
